Ruben Diaz

Ruben Patricio Sanchez Rodriguez-Diaz, 68, of Hartford, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2020. Born in Hartford on September 18, 1951, son of the late Ruben R. Diaz and Gladis S. Rodriguez-Diaz, he was a lifelong resident of Hartford and a graduate of Weaver High School, Class of 1971 and went on to attend Greater Hartford Community College where he studied Liberal Arts. While in high school, Ruben played on the varsity soccer team. As a young boy, Ruben visited his parent’s native country of Cuba. While visiting family, he heard Cuban and Afro-Cuban music for the first time and immediately developed a lifelong passion for all types of Latin music. As young boy, he played the bongos, congas, timbales, and the cow bell. After high school, Ruben pursued his passion of being a musician, playing guitar and all Latin percussion instruments. He played with Ray Davis and the Fabulous Soul Premiers throughout the Hartford area and with steel pan bands that played traditional Latin and Caribbean music. His reputation as a skillful percussionist led him to play in a Polynesian band at the Hu Ke Lau in Massachusetts. In his spare time, he loved listening his favorite artists, Santana, Malo, Bob Marley, Tito Puente, and Celia Cruz. Most of all, Ruben will be remembered as a devoted son, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. As his mother aged, he doted on her and lived with her until the time of her passing. He leaves a son, Terrell S. Watkins of Hartford; a granddaughter, Myara I. Davis-Watkins of Windsor; a sister, Hathor T. Dell of Hartford; and a niece, Karizma M. Dell of Hartford. His family will receive friends on Saturday, September 12, 2-3 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 14, 12 Noon, at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.

Sorry to hear of Rueben's loss.  He was a good classmate, and if I recall correctly, we played on the frosh basketball team together.  Really appreciate this post as it fills in on what he has done since high school. He had a productive and interesting life pursuing his passions.  Rest in peace, Rueben, you will be missed.
